How It Works
REAL School Gardens produces tangible results because our Instructional Coaches have years of classroom experience and understand the daily challenges teachers face. They use this experience to implement our Professional Learning Program which is comprised of four key parts:
- Integrated Instructional Plan:
At partnership launch, and over the course of the program, we facilitate working sessions with the principal and instructional leadership so that our training and curricula are integrated into the overall instructional plan for the school. Instructional integration ensures that students are engaged in hands-on learning in core subjects routinely and teachers have a clear path to success.
- Full-Staff Sessions:
In year one, we conduct two sessions with the full staff. We provide a pedagogical framework for teachers to explore how facilitating experiential learning outdoors improves outcomes for students and provides teachers with opportunities to teach state standards with engaging, effective instructional techniques.
- Instructional Coaching (12 cycles/48 sessions):
We provide ongoing instructional coaching for teachers, tailoring proven experiential learning techniques to each teacher’s individual needs and the grade-level scope and sequence. Each year, the principal selects six teachers to participate in 1 on 1 coaching with a REAL School Gardens Instructional Coach. Each teacher in the selected cohort takes part in a model lesson, two observations, and a planning day in addition to receiving ongoing support from the REAL School Gardens Instructional Coach.
- Ongoing Support:
Partner schools receive access to our online Coaching Center which provides standards-aligned lesson plans and training “on-demand.” The platform also allows teachers to share their experiences with one another and receive feedback from our Coaches.
