A New Chapter in the Pacific Northwest: When Communities Dig In, Futures Grow

A First That Feels Like a Beginning

At John Muir Elementary, a simple schoolyard became a hands-on science and discovery lab...a place where students can explore, question, and learn from the world around them. The transformation marked Out Teach’s first Big Dig in Washington State — a new chapter for our mission to make real-world learning accessible to every child, everywhere.

Thanks to the partnership of Monolithic Power Systems and the Seattle Seahawks, students, teachers, and athletes worked side by side ensure learning is alive, relevant, and rooted in both science and community.

Honoring Culture and Place

From the beginning, the design of the new outdoor lab was shaped by input from the school and members of the local Indigenous community. Together, they helped guide how the space could reflect and honor the land’s original stewards and their deep relationship with nature.

The finished design will incorporate special features inspired by Indigenous culture, celebrating the values of respect, stewardship, and curiosity that align beautifully with the goals of outdoor learning.

This thoughtful collaboration ensures that every lesson taught in this space also carries a reminder: science isn’t just about discovery, it’s about connection, responsibility, and belonging.

From Blueprints to Bloom

For fifth-grader Zara Ndiaya, that spirit of connection came to life through creativity. Her design, chosen as the winning student concept, inspired many of the lab’s playful, academic zones, showing what can happen when students are not only participants, but creators of their own learning spaces.

I designed academic areas for fun learning. I am very proud of it. I poured my entire heart into this and I’m very excited.

The Power of Partnership

This Big Dig was made possible by people and partners who share one vision: that every child deserves access to real-world, hands-on learning.

Monolithic Power Systems brought community, innovation and sustainability to life through their partnership and presence. The Seattle Seahawks brought energy, teamwork, and heart, showing students that leadership isn’t just about winning games. It’s about giving back to the community that cheers you on.
